A new consortium

I am delighted to announce that our project “Sex Differences in Immunity” has been awarded an Interdisciplinary Research Opening (IRO) grant of 995 000 EUR from the University of Helsinki, funded through the Finnish Government’s extraordinary research funding.

As of January 2026, I lead the consortium, which brings together evolutionary biology, immunology, medicine and demography. The consortium members are S. Fagerholm, E. Einiö, E. Kekäläinen, E. Numminen and T. Tukiainen, with me as lead researcher.

Research focus

The consortium asks why immune function differs between the sexes. Within my group, the work combines evolutionary models of age-structured populations with statistical analysis of immune markers across human populations.
